The Federal University of Espírito Santo or Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES) in Portuguese is a public university in Vitória, Espírito Santo, Brazil. UFES was founded in 1954 and is among the country’s largest universities and the area’s most prominent one. It offers high-quality college education for free and strongly integrates its activities in teaching, research, and outreach with all its academic programs.
UFES offers diverse programs for its undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degrees. These programs are spread across its four campuses namely Maruípe and Goiabeiras campuses in the capital city of Vitória, Alegre in the south, and São Mateus in the north. Examples of undergraduate programs include Veterinary Medicine, Food Engineering, Visual Arts, Statistics, Physical Therapy, and Languages and Literature – English.
Postgraduate and doctoral programs at UFES are managed by the Senior Office for Research and Graduate Courses. There are 10 centers offering a variety of graduate courses. The Secretariat for Distance Education is the body tasked to manage all activities and training under distance learning. Online courses available under the UFES distance learning are Visual Arts, Accounting Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Philosophy.
UFES’ commitment to outreach activities in different communities is evident in its hundreds of outreach projects in the country. It lends its facilities not only to academic-related requests but also to wider community purposes. These facilities include museums, language centers, libraries, sports centers, a planetarium, and an astronomical observatory.
The Federal University of Espírito Santo was founded through the efforts of the governor, Jones dos Santos Neves. Neves believed in the importance of higher education as an instrument of change and pushed for the establishment of a university in Espírito Santo.
Today, UFES is a nationally recognized higher education institution and has over 100 undergraduate programs, more than 50 postgraduate programs, and more than 20 doctoral programs. It ranked as the number one university in the state of Espírito Santo and 28th in Brazil based on Brazilian daily newspaper Folha de S.Paulo’s Ranking Universitário Folha. UFES also belongs in the top 100 universities in international university rankings, such as Times Higher Education World University Rankings and the QS Top University Rankings.
