Overview

The University of Bradford is a public research-intensive university situated in Bradford, a city in the metropolitan English county West Yorkshire. It is classified as a plate glass university, which refers to higher learning institutions that garnered university status in the 1960s. It is the 40th university to be established in Britain and the first to have a Department of Peace Studies, which is the largest university center in the world that focuses on the study of conflict and peace.

Although the current institution was officially established in 1966, the University of Bradford traces its history back to 1832, when the Mechanics Institute was founded in response to the need to produce workers who have skills relevant to the city’s emerging industries. In 1882, Mechanics Institute came to be known as the Bradford Technical College and later on, as the Bradford Institute of Technology. It was then classified as a College of Advanced Technology and as such, had the capacity to offer higher education programs. In 1966, a Charter of Incorporation led to the creation of the University of Bradford. After it adopted university status, the school started expanding its teaching and research expertise.

Today, the university is composed of four faculties. The Faculty of Engineering and Informatics is divided into six departments: Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical and Energy Systems Engineering, Civil and Structural Engineering, Biomedical and Electronics Engineering, and Media, Design and Technology. The faculty utilizes state-of-the-art equipment to provide students with the best possible instruction.

Meanwhile, the Faculty of Health Studies is highly regarded for its programs in Midwifery, Nursing, and Allied Health Professions. The faculty runs fully-equipped facilities, including clinical wards, physiotherapy rooms, a movement laboratory, and an X-ray suite.

The Faculty of Life Sciences, on the other hand, incorporates four schools: Chemistry and Biosciences, Archaeological and Forensic Sciences, Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, and Optometry and Vision Science. Research done through the faculty is partly funded by government research councils, including the Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Finally, the Faculty of Management, Law and Social Sciences offers a wide range of law programs through the School of Law that tackles different aspects of the law. The School of Management, on the other hand, is part of a prestigious group of international business schools. It also holds triple accreditation of AMBA, AACSB, and Equis, which are collectively referred to as the Triple Crown. The faculty’s School of Social Sciences, meanwhile, is recognized globally for its outstanding research and teaching in different social science subjects.

According to the latest available data, the University of Bradford has more than 7,000 undergraduate and over 2,000 graduate students. At least 20% of the student body hail from other countries.
