Data Sources and Bibliometric Foundations
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Psychology Scientists in Estonia Ranking is built upon a robust bibliometric framework primarily derived from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other reputable data sources. These platforms provide comprehensive publication and citation records, forming the empirical backbone of the ranking. The bibliometric data used to compute citation-based metrics were meticulously collected on January 12, 2026.
A central metric employed in this ranking is the D-index (Discipline H-index), which measures the impact of a researcher’s contributions specifically within the domain of Psychology. Unlike a general H-index, the D-index exclusively accounts for papers and citation metrics relevant to the analyzed discipline, thereby offering a more precise evaluation of a scientist's standing in the field.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
Our analysis encompassed an extensive set of 279,971 scientist profiles drawn from diverse bibliometric sources covering all academic disciplines. Within this broad dataset, 6 scientists were specifically identified under the discipline of Psychology. To qualify for inclusion in this specialized ranking, a researcher was required to meet several rigorous criteria:
- A minimum D-index of 30 in Psychology.
- The majority of their tier-ranked publications must pertain directly to the field of Psychology.
- Consideration of awards and recognized achievements within Psychology was also factored into the evaluation.
The threshold for the D-index varies in increments of 10 across disciplines, calibrated according to the estimated population size of scholars within each area. This calibrated threshold ensures the inclusion of the top 1% of leading scholars per discipline. Additionally, there is a stipulation that the gap between a scientist’s overall H-index and their Discipline-specific D-index does not exceed 30%, reinforcing alignment between general impact and discipline-specific impact.
Additional Verification Practices
Recognizing the limitations inherent in raw bibliometric data, the Research.com team conducted manual verification and cross-correlation of each scientist’s profile against a comprehensive array of trustworthy publication sources. This step was critical to ensure the authenticity and relevance of the records underlying the ranking.
While not directly affecting the calculation of the D-index or the scientist’s rank, the volume of publications in prominent, peer-reviewed journals and leading conference proceedings serves as an important secondary indicator of a researcher’s contribution to the field. The ranking’s positions are ultimately determined by D-index values derived from the aggregated data of OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most prominent and validated bibliometric databases widely recognized by the global research community.
