Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Microbiology Scientists in Mexico Ranking leverages comprehensive bibliometric data primarily gathered from OpenAlex and CrossRef, complemented by multiple other reputable data sources. The citation-based metrics used to devise the ranking were collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring the most up-to-date and accurate reflection of scholarly output. Each scientist’s position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that considers only publications and citations pertinent to the specific discipline under review—in this case, Microbiology.
Scope of Research and Eligibility Criteria
This ranking is based on a rigorous examination of 187,659 scientist profiles across all disciplines, including detailed analysis of 8 distinguished scientists specializing in Microbiology. To qualify for inclusion, a scientist must have a D-index of at least 40, with the majority of their leading publications concentrated within the field of Microbiology. Additionally, recognition of awards and achievements related specifically to Microbiology was taken into account as a significant supplementary factor.
The threshold for the D-index varies in increments of 10 depending on the estimated number of researchers in each discipline. This approach ensures that the ranking consistently captures the top 1% of leading scholars, calibrated to the size of each scientific community. Furthermore, a proximity requirement is imposed whereby the difference between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index does not exceed 30%, safeguarding domain-specific excellence.
Verification and Validation Practices
We recognize that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of a researcher’s impact. Accordingly, every scientist profile included in the ranking underwent meticulous manual verification. Data were cross-correlated against publications indexed in a broad spectrum of trustworthy sources to confirm accuracy and disciplinary relevance.
While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings is not directly factored into the calculation of the ranking position, it remains a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s contributions within Microbiology. The ranking position itself is rigorously established based on the D-index derived from data curated primarily via OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most prominent and reliable bibliometric platforms recognized by the global research community.
