In compiling the ranking, a total of 188,153 scientist profiles drawn from an array of bibliometric databases were examined across all disciplines, with particular focus on Medicine, including 1,000 scientists identified specifically within this field. To qualify for inclusion, a researcher was required to have a minimum D-index of 70, with the majority of their tier publications concentrated within the field of Medicine.
In addition to bibliometric measures, scientists’ awards and notable achievements in Medicine were also considered as part of the evaluation process. The D-index threshold for top researchers is systematically set in increments of 10 according to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline, ensuring representation of the top 1% of leading experts. Furthermore, to maintain consistency and disciplinary focus, a proximity requirement was applied whereby the difference between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index must not exceed 30%.
Additional Verification Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output, the Research.com team undertook rigorous manual verification of all scientist profiles included in the ranking. These profiles were meticulously cross-correlated against publications indexed in a broad selection of trustworthy sources to affirm accuracy and authenticity.
While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s ranking position, it remains a valuable secondary indicator of scientific contribution within Medicine. The final ranking positions are established using each researcher’s D-index as derived from OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most prominent and widely respected bibliometric databases accessible to the research community today.
