Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Materials Science Scientists in Canada Ranking is primarily based on bibliometric data sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most comprehensive and respected bibliometric databases available to the global research community. In addition to these, multiple other reliable data sources were utilized to ensure thorough coverage and accuracy. The bibliometric data underlying the citation-based metrics used in this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026.
A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that considers only a researcher’s publications and citation impact within the examined discipline—in this case, Materials Science. This approach guarantees a focused and discipline-specific assessment of scholarly contributions rather than a generalized measure.
Scope of Research Examined
For this edition, a comprehensive evaluation was performed across 279,971 scientist profiles aggregated from various bibliometric sources spanning all disciplines. From this pool, 222 scientists identified as active contributors to Materials Science research in Canada were specifically analyzed. To qualify for inclusion, researchers were required to have a D-index of at least 40, and the majority of their tier publications needed to be within the Materials Science discipline.
In addition to bibliometric thresholds, scientists’ awards and notable achievements in Materials Science were factored into the assessment to better reflect their standing and influence within the field. The D-index threshold for top researchers is calibrated in increments of 10 relative to the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline, ensuring the inclusion of at least the top 1% of leading experts. Furthermore, to promote disciplinary relevance, the disparity between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index is constrained to 30% or less.
Additional Verification Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output and impact, the Research.com team implemented rigorous manual verification processes. Each scientist’s profile was cross-correlated against their publications listed in a broad range of trustworthy and authoritative sources to confirm accuracy and ensure validity.
While not influencing the ranking position directly, the number of papers published in prominent journals and reputable conference proceedings was considered an important secondary indicator of meaningful research contributions. The ranking itself is ultimately established using each researcher’s D-index, derived from the robust and curated data harvested from OpenAlex and CrossRef.
