Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Law Scientists in France Ranking is based primarily on comprehensive bibliometric data gathered from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other trusted bibliometric sources. The data collection for citation-based metrics underpinning this ranking was conducted on January 12, 2026, ensuring the inclusion of the most recent and relevant scholarly outputs. A key bibliometric metric employed in determining a scientist’s position in the ranking is the D-index (Discipline H-index), which specifically accounts for publications and citations within the examined discipline of Law. This approach provides a refined measurement of scholarly impact tailored to the domain of interest.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
The ranking thoroughly examined a total of 279,971 scientist profiles aggregated from a variety of bibliometric data sources spanning all scientific disciplines. Within this extensive dataset, two scientists were identified specifically under the discipline of Law.
To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist must satisfy the following criteria:
- Possess a D-index of at least 20, reflecting significant scholarly influence in Law.
- Have a majority of their tier publications—those considered most impactful—within the field of Law.
- Demonstrate notable awards and achievements relevant to the discipline of Law.
The D-index threshold for considering top researchers is dynamically set in increments of 10 based on the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline, while ensuring comprehensive representation of the top 1% of leading experts. Additionally, to maintain discipline-specific precision, candidates must exhibit a proximity of 30% or less between their general H-index and their D-index, thereby validating that their principal contributions are concentrated within Law.
Additional Verification Practices
Recognizing the inherent limitations of raw bibliometric data, the research team meticulously undertook manual verification of all scientist profiles included in the ranking. This labor-intensive process involved cross-referencing each profile against publications indexed in a broad array of trustworthy sources to confirm the accuracy of publication and citation records.
While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence the ranking position, it serves as a meaningful secondary indicator of a scientist’s contribution and standing within their field.
The ranking positions were ultimately established using each researcher’s D-index derived from data consolidated in OpenAlex and CrossRef—the most comprehensive and widely recognized bibliometric databases accessible to the scientific community.
