A scientist's position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that exclusively considers a researcher’s publications and citation impact within the specific discipline under examination — in this case, Engineering and Technology. This ensures that the ranking strictly reflects contributions relevant to the field.
Scope of Research and Ranking Criteria
The ranking’s scope is grounded in an extensive examination of 279,971 scientist profiles identified from various bibliometric data sources, covering all research disciplines globally. Specifically, within the Engineering and Technology discipline, 7,273 scientist profiles were analyzed.
To qualify for inclusion in this ranking, a researcher must meet the following criteria:
- Possess a D-index of at least 30 within Engineering and Technology.
- Have the majority of their tier publications categorized within the field of Engineering and Technology.
- Demonstrate notable awards and achievements relevant to Engineering and Technology.
The D-index threshold for considered top researchers is dynamically set in increments of 10, scaled according to the total estimated number of scholars in each discipline. This approach guarantees that the top 1% of leading scholars are incorporated while maintaining rigorous standards. Furthermore, the ranking requires that the proximity between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index remains within 30%, ensuring a consistent level of excellence within their specialized area.
Verification and Validation Practices
Recognizing the complexity of evaluating scholarly output, our researchers acknowledge that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as a definitive tool to assess scientific contributions. Therefore, every scientist profile included in the ranking underwent manual verification and was cross-correlated against publications listed in a broad array of trustworthy academic sources.
While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings is not a direct factor determining a researcher's rank, it serves as a valuable secondary signal, reflecting the quality and impact of a scientist's work within their field.
Ultimately, the position within the ranking is established using the D-index calculated from data aggregated primarily from OpenAlex and CrossRef. These platforms are among the most prominent and widely respected bibliometric databases available to the research community, guaranteeing credibility and transparency.
