A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index). The D-index is a discipline-specific adaptation of the traditional H-index, which considers only the publications and citation metrics relevant to the Ecology and Evolution discipline. This tailored approach allows for a more precise comparison of researchers focused in this particular field.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
This ranking was compiled after examining 279,971 scientist profiles identified from a diverse array of bibliometric data sources encompassing all academic disciplines. Specifically within the Ecology and Evolution discipline, 1,482 scientists were evaluated. To qualify for inclusion, a scientist’s D-index had to meet a minimum threshold of 30, and a majority of their tier-ranked publications needed to fall within the domain of Ecology and Evolution.
In addition to their bibliometric performance, researchers' awards and recognized achievements within Ecology and Evolution were also factors considered in the evaluation process. The D-index threshold is dynamically adjusted in increments of 10, reflecting the total estimated number of scholars within each discipline. This ensures that the ranking captures the top 1% of leading scholars without excluding emerging talents.
Moreover, a proximity criterion was applied such that the difference between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index does not exceed 30%, ensuring that the discipline-specific impact aligns closely with their overall research influence.
Verification and Validation Processes
The Research.com team acknowledges that raw bibliometric data alone cannot definitively quantify a scholar’s contribution to science. To address this, all scientist profiles included in the ranking were manually verified and cross-correlated with publications from a broad spectrum of trustworthy academic sources. This rigorous validation process enhances the accuracy and credibility of the ranking.
While the quantity of papers published in prestigious journals and leading conference proceedings is not directly factored into the ranking position, it serves as an important secondary indicator of a researcher’s influence and contribution within their scientific niche.
The primary ranking criterion—the D-index—is established exclusively using data sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, the foremost bibliometric databases accessible to the global research community.
