Data Sources Utilized in the 4th Edition of the Research.com Best Scientists in Canada Ranking
The 4th edition of the Research.com Best Scientists in Canada Ranking is based on a rigorous analysis of bibliometric data sourced primarily from OpenAlex and CrossRef, along with data drawn from multiple other reputable sources. These databases are recognized globally for their comprehensive coverage of academic publications and citation metrics. To ensure the highest level of accuracy and currency, the bibliometric data underlying the citation-based metrics used in the ranking were collected on 2024-11-27. The cornerstone for establishing a scientist’s position in the ranking is the researcher’s H-index, a widely used metric that quantifies both the productivity and impact of a scholar’s published work.
Scope of the Research and Selection Criteria
In the preparation of this ranking, an extensive scope of research was undertaken, examining 279,971 scientist profiles identified from a variety of bibliometric data sources, covering all major scientific disciplines. The minimum qualifying H-index required for each scientist was tailored to suit each research area, generally being set at 30 or 40 depending on disciplinary norms. In addition to the H-index, scientists’ awards and other achievements in their respective fields were also considered as supplementary factors during the assessment process. Ultimately, the published ranking features only the top 1,000 scientists in Canada with the highest H-indexes.
Verification Practices and Data Integrity
We recognize that raw bibliometric data alone can never provide a completely definitive measure of scholarly output or impact. In acknowledgement of this, all scientist profiles included in the ranking underwent rigorous manual verification. Profile information and associated metrics were cross-correlated against publications in a wide range of reliable and trustworthy sources to enhance accuracy.
While it does not directly impact ranking position in the Research.com framework, the number of papers published in prominent journals and leading conference proceedings is viewed as a meaningful secondary indicator of a scientist’s impact within a specific field. The position in the final ranking is established using each researcher’s H-index as reflected in the datasets from OpenAlex and CrossRef—the most prominent and widely recognized bibliometric databases available to the academic research community.
