The University of Rome Tor Vergata is a public research university located in Rome, Italy. Founded in 1982, it is one of the few universities in Italy that are campus-based. Its campus is home to University Hospital Tor Vergata, one of the advanced hospitals in Italy, and the Italian Space Agency. It is also the first Italian university to have an English-only degree.
The university’s mission is to be able to make contributions to people’s education and training as well as to scientific research and innovation that will help spur sustainable development in the country, in the European region, and the world. Meanwhile, its vision is to be a leader in research, education, and development for it to be recognized as one of the best universities in Europe by 2025.
The university offers around 50 bachelor’s degrees and 50 master’s degrees. On the other hand, they also offer over 200 specialization courses and 30 Ph.D. courses. The university houses a total of 19 departments organized into six schools: Law, Economics, Humanities, Engineering, Medicine & Surgery, and Mathematical, Physical, and Natural Sciences.
The University of Rome Tor Vergata was established in 1982 with the aim of giving students access to high-quality education that will prepare them to face the challenges of the 21st century. In 1987, the Centre for Economic and International Studies was put up, adding an internationally recognized economic research center within the campus. The university is also closely situated within major research institutions, such as the Italian Space Agency whose main headquarters was inaugurated in Tor Vergata in 2012.
Notable alumni from the University of Rome Tor Vergata include actor Giulio Berruti who has appeared in The Lizzie McGuire Movie and Monte Carlo; composer and pianist Piero Niro; and writer Alessandro Piperno.
The University of Rome Tor Vergata is considered one of the leading public universities in Italy, landing in top 10 spots in academic rankings. It has been recognized as belonging to the top 200 to 600 universities in the world, gaining top scores for its math and physics subjects. In addition, it has been cited as one of the top 150 young universities in the world that has been established in the last 50 years.
The university has been involved in interesting research, including creating a 3D reconstruction of Renaissance painter Raphael’s face, developing a statistical model that will identify signs of life in distant planets, and mapping children’s immune response to a life-threatening inflammatory syndrome linked to COVID-19.
