The University of Pisa (UniPi) is a public research institution situated in Pisa, Italy. It is the 10th oldest university in the country and the 19th oldest enduring institution for higher education in the world. It is part of the Pisa University System, alongside the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies and Scuola Normale Superiore. Moreover, the establishment has a close connection with many nationally and internationally important cultural institutions, including the Pisan Institute of the National Board of Research.
While several scholars claim that the university’s origin dates way back to the 11th century, the institution was officially established through an edict of Pope Clement VI in 1343. It is one of the first universities in Europe to receive papal attestation that warranted the legal and universal importance of its educational qualifications. The first subjects taught within the institution are Canon Law and Medicine, Civil Law, and Theology.
The University of Pisa offers a variety of study programs including bachelor’s or master’s programs and PhD courses. The university also puts a strong emphasis on internationalization by offering an MBA and 12 master’s degrees that are taught exclusively in English. There are specialization schools as well that provide students with skills and knowledge in specific professions including legal, cultural heritage, and veterinary.
The school also offers curricular and non-curricular internships that can take place at an organization or company. Students also have the option of entering an integrated study program that will grant them a Joint or Double Degree upon completion. Furthermore, there are summer and winter schools in UniPi that offer academic courses for both international and European students. Meanwhile, for those who want to obtain their degree from abroad, UniPi offers one-year specialization programs.
UniPi comprises 20 departments and several high-level research centers in various sectors including Medicine, Engineering, Astrophysics, Computer Science, and Agriculture. It is not campus-based as opposed to other big universities so its departments and buildings are spread throughout Pisa. This means that students who aren’t living nearby have to find accommodation through the real estate agents of the city.
The University of Pisa is replete with notable alumni who have become important people especially in Italian politics, science, theology, and other fields. To exemplify, five Popes including Clement IX, Clement XI, and Leo X all graduated from the institution. There are also two Italian presidents, three Nobel Laureates, and five Italian prime ministers who hailed from UniPi.
