Northwestern Polytechnical University (NWPU or NPU) is a public university in Xi'an, Shaanxi, China. Known to be a national key university, NPU is recognized as a prestigious institution with top-level central government support, making it also a Double First Class University. The university is under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People’s Republic of China.
NPU can trace its history and heritage back to three predecessors: the Northwestern Engineering Institute, East China Aeronautics Institute, and the People’s Liberation Army Military Engineering Institute. Today, it keeps up with its long and rich tradition and continues to highly specialize in research and education in the fields of marine, astronautical, and aeronautical engineering.
Since its inception, the university has had a hand in developing more than 150,000 researchers and highly-skilled technicians who have contributed to the country’s economic development and defense. Among NPU’s graduates, there have been 30 generals in the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and 30 fellows of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Science.
Notable alumni can be found in various fields. Jasen Wang, the CEO of the technology company Makeblock, graduated from NPU. Yang Wei, an aircraft designer and the president of Zhejiang University, is also an NPU alumnus. He is famous for research in the fields of mechatronic reliability and fracture mechanics among others.
NPU operates 17 schools. These include its famed Schools of Natural and Applied Sciences, Electronics and Information, Astronautics, Aeronautics, Material Science and Engineering, Marxism, Computer Science, and Marine Science and Technology, among others. Besides these main schools, the university also operates other learning and research institutes and centers. They include the National Secrecy School, the Continuing Education School, the Engineering Practice Exercise Center, and its International College.
Its academic schools and adjunct learning and research organizations offer around 58 undergraduate, 110-plus master’s, 60-plus doctorate, and 14 postdoctoral programs. Among these programs, the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China ranks its Aeronautical and Astronautical Science and Technology the highest in the country.
Postgraduates at the university are encouraged to be innovative. It was in 2002 that the university opened its Postgraduates Innovation Center. The Innovation Center offers space and facilities for open experimentation, healthy competition, and for turning passive research into innovative usable products. Furthermore, it helps cultivate a spirit of innovation through competitive events like mathematical modeling and robotic competitions.
The university also operates nationally important laboratories. It hosts the State Key Laboratory of Space Flight Dynamics, the State Key Laboratory of UAV Special Technology, and the National Key Laboratory of Aerodynamic Design and Research, to name a few.
