Georgetown University is a private research university in Washington, DC. It was established in 1789 by Bishop John Carroll as Georgetown College. Today, the university is known for its highly selective undergraduate admissions and as a leading institution in international relations and government. Although it is the oldest Jesuit and Catholic higher education institution in the United States, it is being operated independently of its religious roots. In fact, most students are non-Catholic.

Georgetown runs 11 different schools. They are (1) Georgetown College, (2) Georgetown Law, (3) Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, (4) Biomedical Graduate Education, (5) McCourt School of Public Policy, (6) McDonough School of Business, (7) School of Continuing Studies, (8) School of Medicine, (9) School of Nursing and Health Studies, (10) Walsh School of Foreign Service, and (11) Georgetown University Qatar in Education City in Doha.

The university offers programs with degrees in 48 disciplines. Areas of studies range from African Studies to Conflict Resolution. However, its strongest programs are in the fields of politics and international studies. Notable alumni include 33 Truman Scholars, two U.S. Supreme Court justices, 14 foreign heads of state, and two U.S. presidents. Moreover, Georgetown alumni have more U.S. diplomats than any other university in the country.

Georgetown University describes itself as a student-centered research university. It is also classified as an R1: Doctoral University with very high research activity. The faculty conduct research in a wide variety of areas. However, a greater emphasis is given to the following areas: public policy, science, ethics, religion, and cancer medicine. Furthermore, it collaborates with Virginia Tech and Columbia University in cross-institutional research projects.

Georgetown also hosts institutions and centers that sponsor research. They include the Woodstock Theological Center, the Prince Alwaleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, and the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs.

The university has four campuses located in Washington, D.C. and one in Qatar. Its main campus and its medical school are located on an elevated area overlooking Northern Virginia. Its Law Center is situated in the Capitol Hill neighborhood with five buildings. Its School of Continuing Studies campus is in downtown Washington, DC. The 95,000-square-foot building hosts the university’s graduate programs, including those in the fields of Real Estate, Sports Industry Management, Applied Intelligence, Public Relations, and Journalism, among others.

Its Qatar campus acts as an external campus of the university’s Walsh School of Foreign Service. It was established in 2005 as an undergraduate international affairs and liberal arts school. Courses offered are identical to those at the main campus.

In athletics, Georgetown University is represented by its Hoyas team. Its basketball team has won seven Big East Championships (tied for the most titles) and has competed in four Final Fours. The Hoyas basketball team won the national championship in 1984.
