Overview

The Brno University of Technology (BUT) is a public institution for higher education located in the Czech Republic. It is considered the oldest and the largest technical university in the country. Known for its strong focus on research and innovation, it actively cooperates with various industries through the Technology Transfer Department. Many of its research projects have practical and commercial applications. Additionally, the university is home to an incubator scheme that helps establish start-ups and similar initiatives.

The campus is located right in the epicenter of the area’s business district, nestled beside the Czech Technology Park where prominent companies such as Vodafone, IBM, Red Hat, and Zebra Technologies have offices. The university continuously invests in new facilities, buildings, and equipment to support ongoing and future projects.

BUT offers degree studies in Czech with select programs conducted in English. Students can choose a specific topic of interest available in one of its faculties and institutes. These include the Faculty of Architecture, the Faculty of Civil Engineering, the Faculty of Chemistry, the Faculty of Business and Management, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Fine Art, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication, the Faculty of Information Technology, and the Institute for Forensic Engineering (IFE). In addition to these, the university has a Center for Sports Activities (CESA) which manages the physical culture in the campus in cooperation with the Faculty of Business and Management.

Aside from its academic programs, BUT has several research programs in various areas such as information and communication technology, environmental technology, robotics and artificial engineering, microelectronic and nanotechnology, and more. Research projects in the Brno University of Technology are often conducted in cooperation with national and international bodies from body academic and industrial organizations. Additionally, research is fully integrated into various curricula and programs. Students can gain a range of practical experience through projects and internships.

Some of its most notable research centers are the Material Research Center in Chemistry, the Advanced Materials, Structures, and Technologies (AdMaS), and the Center for Research and Utilization of Renewable Energy. They also house the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC) which was established in cooperation with other universities in Brno.

Aside from academic and professional endeavors, students have a rich and rewarding college experience in BUT. All student activities are centered around Palačák where refectories, faculties, cafes, sports grounds, student clubs, and dormitories are located. They also have access to sports facilities and equipment such as gyms, climbing walls, fitness, tennis courts, and more.

Moreover, Brno is a popular student city with 13 universities in the area. The city is always buzzing with activities such as concerts, parties, exhibitions, and festivals.
