Binghamton University, often referred to as the State University of New York at Binghamton or SUNY Binghamton, is a highly regarded public research institution in the United States. Serving over 18,000 undergraduate and graduate students in the country, the university is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system and has three campuses spread throughout Binghamton, Vestal, and Johnson City.

Established in 1946, the university began academic activities as a small liberal arts college under the name Triple Cities College. Before becoming a large research institution and taking on its current name, the university also served as an establishment that caters to the needs of local veterans returning home from World War II. In 1999, it adopted Binghamton University as its name and was formally designated as a state university.

With international recognition for its academic and research quality, Binghamton University offers a broad, interdisciplinary education and research with an all-inclusive and global perspective. It is known for its practical approach to teaching and learning that often fosters open dialog and innovative solutions to important problems. It is also categorized under "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity,” making it a central hub for research developments in the Southern Tier of upstate New York.

Overall, Binghamton University comprises six schools: Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Watson College Engineering and Applied Science, Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, School of Management, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and College of Community and Public Affairs. As a world-class institution, it serves both national and international students and is consistently ranked as a top university in the state of New York.

Binghamton University also serves as home to four federally designated research facilities that mostly center around the developmental exposure to alcohol, focus on smart energy, flexible hybrid electronics, and battery storage. It also has an undergraduate research center that aims to help students find programs and scholarships that can support their research activities. These include programs like the Summer Scholars and Artists program, the First-Year Research Immersion program (FRI), and the Source Project.

Moreover, the university house several state-of-the-art and world-class student facilities, including the Anderson Center for the Performing Arts, the Events Center, and
the Innovative Technologies Complex. Its library system also provides access to an extensive collection of books, periodicals, journals, and various electronic databases to facilitate the research activities of students and faculty. Moreover, Binghamton University offers on-campus residency for graduate and undergraduate students.
