Data Sources and Methodology for the 4th Edition of the Research.com Best Economics and Finance Universities in China Ranking
The 4th edition of the Research.com Best Economics and Finance Universities in China Ranking is derived from a meticulous evaluation of bibliometric data aggregated from leading sources, primarily OpenAlex and CrossRef, in addition to a range of other reputable databases. The citation-based metrics underlying the ranking are devised exclusively from discipline-specific bibliometric data collected as of 2024-11-27.
The ranking of institutions is directly based on the aggregated sum of the D-indexes (Disciplinary H-index) of all included scholars whose primary publication area is Economics and Finance and who are affiliated with the respective institutions. The D-index metric considers only publications and citation data strictly within the designated discipline, ensuring a high level of granularity and relevance in the evaluation.
Scope of Research and Selection Criteria
The ranking’s scope is founded on an exhaustive analysis of 279,971 scientist profiles identified across various bibliometric databases. Of these, 12,210 scientists specializing in Economics and Finance were subjected to detailed scrutiny. To ensure the rigor and excellence of the ranked cohort, a minimum D-index threshold of 30 was established for candidate scientists. Furthermore, the majority of qualifying publications for each scientist had to be rigorously in the field of Economics and Finance.
Scientist selection for the ranking also took into account their awards and notable achievements in Economics and Finance. The D-index threshold was dynamically adjusted in increments of 10, tailored to the estimated size of the scholar population in each discipline, while guaranteeing the inclusion of approximately the top 1% of leading researchers. To further reinforce the discipline focus, only those scientists whose D-index was within a maximum 30% proximity of their general H-index were eligible. Awards and achievements in the target field were also integrated into the selection process to provide a holistic assessment of research excellence.
Verification and Quality Assurance Practices
Recognizing the limitations inherent in purely quantitative evaluation, the Research.com team engaged in comprehensive manual verification of each scientist profile. This process included cross-correlation against publications recorded in a diverse array of trustworthy sources in the scientific community. While the total number of papers published in high-profile journals and conference proceedings is not directly factored into the ranking, it is acknowledged as a valuable secondary signal of a researcher’s impact and contribution to the field.
The assignment of positions within the ranking is based on the robust H-index information for each researcher as gathered from OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most established and reliable bibliometric data providers available to the scholarly community. For complete details, the full methodology is transparently documented and available at our methodology page.
