Each scientist's position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that incorporates only the papers and citation information relevant specifically to the examined discipline. This targeted approach allows for a nuanced and discipline-appropriate assessment of research influence.
Scope and Criteria of the Ranking
The ranking process commenced with an examination of 279,971 scientist profiles identified across diverse bibliometric data sources spanning all academic disciplines. From this broad cohort, the focus narrowed specifically to 20 scientists recognized within the Social Sciences and Humanities fields.
To qualify for inclusion in this ranking, scientists had to meet two primary criteria:
- A D-index of at least 30, ensuring a baseline of impactful research within the discipline.
- A majority of their tier publications had to be directly aligned with Social Sciences and Humanities, reflecting a sustained and concentrated focus in these areas.
In addition, researchers’ awards and notable achievements within Social Sciences and Humanities were incorporated as important qualitative factors contributing to candidate evaluation.
The D-index threshold is dynamically adjusted in increments of 10 relative to the size of the total scholar population in each discipline, carefully calibrated to guarantee that the top 1% of leading experts are consistently included in the list. To ensure domain consistency, candidates were also required to exhibit a proximity of 30% or less between their general H-index and their discipline-specific D-index.
Additional Verification and Methodological Rigor
Recognizing the limitations of raw bibliometric data as absolute evaluative tools, the Research.com team undertook exhaustive manual verification of all scientist profiles. Each profile was cross-correlated against publications from a wide array of trustworthy and reputable sources to confirm authenticity and disciplinary relevance.
While not a direct factor influencing ranking position, the quantity of papers published in prominent journals and esteemed conference proceedings serves as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist's contributions and visibility within their specific area of research.
The final rankings are established using each researcher's D-index, as determined by data sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef—widely regarded as the most comprehensive and reliable bibliometric platforms available to the global research community.
