The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Physics Scientists in Portugal Ranking is grounded on robust bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, alongside multiple other reputable databases. These platforms represent the most comprehensive and well-established repositories of scholarly metadata available to the research community. The bibliometric data used to derive the citation-based metrics incorporated in the ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. A scientist’s position within this ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a metric that exclusively considers publications and citation metrics within the specific discipline under examination—Physics, in this case.
Scope of Research
This ranking evaluates 279,971 scientist profiles collated from a wide range of bibliometric databases spanning all academic disciplines. Within this broad dataset, profiles of 9 scientists specializing in Physics were specifically examined. To qualify for inclusion in the Physics ranking, a researcher’s D-index had to be at least 70, and the majority of their tier publications needed to be firmly rooted in the field of Physics. Additionally, scientists’ awards and achievements within the discipline were also factored into the evaluation.
The threshold D-index for categorizing top researchers is dynamically set in increments of 10 based on the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline, ensuring that the top 1% of leading experts are incorporated in the ranking. Furthermore, a proximity threshold of 30% or less between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index is required to guarantee the specificity of expertise within the discipline.
Additional Verification Practices
The Research.com team is acutely aware that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output or impact. In recognition of this, all scientist profiles included in the ranking underwent meticulous manual verification. Each profile was cross-correlated against publications indexed in a broad spectrum of credible and trustworthy sources to ensure accuracy and authenticity.
While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s position in the ranking, it remains an important secondary indicator of a scientist’s contribution to their specific field. Ultimately, the ranking positions are established using each researcher’s D-index, with data sourced carefully from OpenAlex and CrossRef, the most authoritative bibliometric databases available.
