A scientist’s position within the ranking is determined based on their Discipline H-index (D-index), a refined metric that exclusively accounts for publications and citations within the specific discipline under examination, in this case, Microbiology. This approach allows for a more accurate reflection of a researcher’s impact and expertise in their specialized field.
Scope of Research and Ranking Criteria
The ranking evaluation encompassed a total of 187,659 scientist profiles identified from a broad set of bibliometric databases covering all academic disciplines. Specifically, 1,023 scientists were identified within the domain of Microbiology for consideration.
To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist’s D-index was required to be at least 40, with the majority of their tier-one publications concentrated in Microbiology. In addition, the candidates’ awards and achievements within the field were carefully assessed as supplementary factors enhancing their profile strength.
The threshold for the D-index is incremented by 10 points relative to the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline, thereby ensuring that the top 1% of leading researchers are systematically incorporated. Furthermore, to maintain relevance and focus, the disparity between a scientist’s overall H-index and their Microbiology-specific D-index must not exceed 30%.
Additional Verification Practices
Recognizing the limitations of quantitative data alone, the ranking team implemented rigorous manual verification of all scientist profiles. This process involved cross-referencing publication records with a variety of trusted sources beyond primary bibliometric databases to confirm the accuracy and relevance of the data.
While the ranking position itself is primarily determined by the D-index calculated using data from OpenAlex and CrossRef, the number of publications appearing in prominent journals and leading conference proceedings serves as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s contribution to the field.
OpenAlex and CrossRef are globally recognized, comprehensive bibliometric databases that provide a reliable foundation for such analyses. Researchers and institutions interested in a detailed understanding of the methodology are encouraged to visit our methodology page.
