The bibliometric data used to compute the citation-based metrics were collected on January 12, 2026. Each scientist’s position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that selectively incorporates only those publications and citations relevant to the examined discipline—in this case, Microbiology. This focus ensures that the ranking reflects a researcher’s impact specifically within their field rather than their overall citation profile.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
The ranking is derived from an extensive review of 187,659 scientist profiles identified across a broad array of bibliometric data sources encompassing all academic disciplines. Within this extensive dataset, 34 scientists specifically working in the field of Microbiology in Austria were examined with particular scrutiny.
To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, researchers were required to have a D-index of at least 40, alongside a majority of their publications falling squarely within the area of Microbiology. Furthermore, awards and notable achievements within the discipline were taken into account to supplement the bibliometric data. The threshold for the D-index is adaptively set, increasing in increments of 10 relative to the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline, thereby ensuring that the top 1% of leading experts are represented.
Additionally, to guarantee disciplinary relevance, a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index must be within 30% proximity of each other, reinforcing that the ranking highlights researchers whose most impactful work is concentrated in Microbiology.
Verification Practices and Secondary Considerations
We recognize that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture the qualitative aspects of scholarly output. Accordingly, all scientist profiles in the ranking underwent rigorous manual verification and cross-correlation against publications listed in a diverse range of trustworthy sources. This meticulous process ensures the integrity and accuracy of the ranking.
While not directly influencing a researcher’s rank, the quantity of publications in prestigious journals and leading conference proceedings is also acknowledged as a valuable secondary indicator of scientific contribution within Microbiology.
The final ranking positions are established based on each researcher’s D-index calculated from data obtained chiefly from OpenAlex and CrossRef, underscoring our commitment to utilizing the highest quality and most current bibliometric information available.
