The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Mathematics Scientists in South Africa Ranking primarily relies on comprehensive bibliometric data obtained from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other reputable data sources. The bibliometric data used to devise the citation-based metrics underpinning the ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), which specifically includes only papers and citation metrics relevant to the examined discipline—Mathematics in this case. This focus ensures that the ranking accurately reflects disciplinary impact rather than general citation counts.
Scope and Criteria of the Ranking
The ranking synthesized data from an extensive pool of 279,971 scientist profiles identified across various bibliometric sources and spanning all scientific disciplines. From this broad dataset, 14 scientists specializing in Mathematics were evaluated according to stringent criteria. To qualify for the ranking, a scientist's D-index had to be at least 30, and the majority of their tier publications needed to be within the field of Mathematics. Additionally, scientists’ awards and notable achievements in Mathematics were taken into account to provide a well-rounded evaluation.
The D-index threshold for inclusion is dynamically set as an increment of 10, adjusted according to the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline. This scaling approach guarantees that the top 1% of leading scholars by disciplinary impact are represented in the list. Furthermore, a proximity of 30% or less between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index was required, ensuring a strong alignment between overall research influence and specific disciplinary excellence.
Verification and Validation Procedures
Recognizing the limitations of raw bibliometric data as an absolute evaluative tool, the Research.com team applies meticulous manual verification processes to each scientist profile. This includes cross-correlating publication records against a wide range of trustworthy sources to confirm accuracy and relevance. While the number of papers published in prestigious journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s position in the ranking, it serves as a valuable secondary signal of their contribution and standing within the Mathematics research community.
The final ranking positions are established using each researcher's D-index calculated from data aggregated primarily through OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most prominent and trusted bibliometric databases available to the global research community.
