A scientist’s position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a tailored metric that considers only publications and citations within the specific area of Environmental Sciences. By focusing exclusively on discipline-relevant output, the D-index provides a disciplined and precise measure of scientific impact within the field.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
Our examination encompassed 279,971 scientist profiles sourced from a multitude of bibliometric databases spanning all scientific disciplines, with a dedicated focus on 1 scientist identified within the Environmental Sciences domain specific to Bahrain. To qualify for inclusion in this ranking, a researcher’s D-index must be at least 30, reflecting a significant threshold of scholarly contribution in Environmental Sciences.
In addition to the D-index, a majority of a qualifying scientist’s tier publications had to be firmly rooted in Environmental Sciences, ensuring disciplinary relevance. Recognized awards and achievements in the field were also factored into the evaluation to reinforce the comprehensive assessment of research excellence.
The D-index thresholds are set as increments of 10, calibrated according to the estimated total number of active scholars within each discipline. This approach guarantees that approximately the top 1% of leading researchers in Environmental Sciences are incorporated into the list. Furthermore, to maintain methodological rigor, only scientists whose general H-index and D-index differ by no more than 30% are considered, maintaining proximity between their overall and discipline-specific impact.
Additional Verification Practices
We acknowledge that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute tool for evaluating scholarly output. Accordingly, every scientist profile included in the ranking underwent manual verification processes. Profiles were cross-correlated against publications from a broad spectrum of trustworthy and authoritative sources to ensure accuracy and reliability of the data.
Although not directly influencing a scientist’s rank, the volume of publications in prominent journals and conference proceedings serves as a valuable secondary signal reflecting a researcher’s contribution to Environmental Sciences. The ranking positions are formally established based on each researcher’s D-index derived from OpenAlex and CrossRef, both of which are recognized as leading bibliometric databases, widely respected and utilized within the research community.
