Data Sources and Methodology
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Economics and Finance Scientists in South Africa Ranking is primarily built upon comprehensive bibliometric data collected from globally recognized databases, including OpenAlex and CrossRef, among multiple other reputable data sources. On January 12, 2026, an extensive data extraction process was conducted to gather citation-based metrics essential for formulating the ranking. Central to the ranking methodology is the D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that carefully considers only those publications and citation counts relevant to the Economics and Finance discipline. This ensures that each scientist’s position reflects their specialized impact within the examined field rather than their overall scholarly output.
Scope of Research and Ranking Criteria
The ranking process began with an examination of 279,971 scientist profiles identified across various bibliometric repositories and disciplines. From this extensive dataset, 7,000 scientists specializing in Economics and Finance were evaluated in detail. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, researchers were required to meet a minimum D-index threshold of 30. Furthermore, a majority of their tier-level publications had to be clearly situated within the Economics and Finance domain. Additional considerations included recognition of awards and notable achievements specifically pertaining to this field.
The threshold for the D-index is dynamically adjusted in increments of 10 based on the estimated population size of scholars within each discipline, while always ensuring representation of at least the top 1% of leading experts. Moreover, the methodology mandates that the difference between a scientist’s overall H-index and their D-index should not exceed 30%, ensuring a strong disciplinary focus aligned with their specialized research impact.
Verification and Validation Practices
Recognizing the limitations inherent in raw bibliometric data, the ranking team employed rigorous verification protocols to uphold the accuracy and credibility of the profiles included. Every scientist’s profile underwent manual verification and cross-correlation against publication records from a wide array of trusted sources, ensuring the integrity of the data supporting each ranking position.
While the number of publications in high-impact journals and prestigious conference proceedings does not directly influence the ranking position, it serves as an important secondary indicator of a researcher’s contribution and influence within Economics and Finance. The primary ranking metric, the D-index, is calculated strictly from citation data extracted from OpenAlex and CrossRef, which remain the most authoritative and comprehensive bibliometric databases accessible to the global research community.
