Sources of Data Used in the Ranking
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Economics and Finance Scientists in South Africa Ranking has been meticulously developed using comprehensive bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other reputable data sources to ensure completeness and accuracy. The citation-based metrics that underpin this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026, reflecting the most recent and relevant data available at the time of compilation. Each scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that exclusively incorporates papers and citation counts related to the researcher’s examined discipline, thereby providing a more precise assessment of their disciplinary impact.
Scope of Research and Ranking Criteria
The ranking analysis encompassed a total of 279,971 scientist profiles drawn from various bibliometric databases spanning all academic disciplines. Specifically, within the domain of Economics and Finance, seven scientists were identified for evaluation. To qualify for inclusion in this specialized ranking, a researcher was required to have a minimum D-index of 30, with the majority of their tier publications classified within the Economics and Finance discipline. Additionally, consideration was given to the researcher’s notable awards and achievements in the field to complement bibliometric measures.
The threshold for the D-index is set in increments of 10 relative to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline. This approach ensures that the ranking consistently reflects the top 1% of leading scholars in the field. Furthermore, to validate the relevancy of a scientist’s disciplinary impact, a proximity criterion of 30% or less between their overall H-index and their D-index is maintained, reinforcing the alignment between general scholarly influence and subject-specific expertise.
Additional Verification Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data should never serve as an absolute determinant of scholarly output, the Research.com team implemented rigorous manual verification procedures for all scientist profiles included in the ranking. Each profile was cross-correlated against publications from a broad array of trustworthy academic sources, ensuring authenticity and accuracy.
While the number of papers published in prestigious journals and conference proceedings does not directly affect a researcher’s ranking position, it remains a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s contributions to the advancement of Economics and Finance research. The final ranking positions are established using each researcher’s D-index based on data gathered from OpenAlex and CrossRef, both of which are among the most prominent and respected bibliometric databases accessible to the global research community.
