A scientist's position within the ranking is determined according to their Discipline H-index, or D-index. This specialized metric considers only those papers and citations that fall within the examined discipline—Economics and Finance in this case—thereby providing an accurate reflection of research impact specific to the field.
Scope and Criteria of the Ranking
The ranking methodology commenced by examining a total of 279,971 scientist profiles identified from a wide array of bibliometric data sources across all scientific disciplines. Within this comprehensive dataset, 1,451 scientists specializing specifically in Economics and Finance were evaluated.
To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist’s D-index needed to meet a minimum threshold of 30. Furthermore, a majority of their tier publications had to be within the domain of Economics and Finance. Awards and notable achievements in the field were also considered as supplementary factors. The D-index threshold is dynamically adjusted in increments of 10 in proportion to the estimated total number of researchers within each discipline, ensuring that the ranking consistently incorporates the top 1% of leading scholars.
An important quality control parameter is the proximity between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index, which must not exceed 30%. This measure ensures that a researcher’s impact within the discipline is representative and not disproportionately diverging from their overall scientific influence.
Verification and Validation Practices
The Research.com team acknowledges that raw bibliometric data cannot serve as an absolute metric to evaluate scholarly output. To enhance the reliability of the ranking, all scientist profiles were subjected to manual verification and cross-correlation against publications indexed in a broad range of trustworthy sources.
While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings is not a factor directly influencing the ranking position, it is regarded as a valuable secondary signal reflective of a scientist’s research contributions in Economics and Finance.
The final rankings are established exclusively through each researcher’s D-index, calculated from bibliometric information obtained from OpenAlex and CrossRef, which are among the most prominent and trusted databases accessible to the research community.
