Data Sources and Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Economics and Finance Scientists in Kenya Ranking is founded upon a comprehensive and meticulously gathered dataset. Primarily, bibliometric information was sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, complemented by multiple other authoritative databases to ensure accuracy and breadth. The citation-based metrics, essential for ranking determination, were extracted on January 12, 2026, providing a current and robust snapshot of scholarly impact.
A scientist’s position within this ranking is determined exclusively by their D-index (Discipline H-index). This metric uniquely focuses on a researcher’s output and citation impact within the specific discipline of Economics and Finance, ensuring that only relevant publications and citations contribute to their evaluated scholarly influence.
Scope of Research and Eligibility Criteria
The ranking examined a total of 279,971 scientist profiles identified from a diverse array of bibliometric sources across all scientific disciplines worldwide. Within this extensive population, 1,000 scientists specialized explicitly in Economics and Finance were isolated for assessment.
To qualify for inclusion in the Economics and Finance ranking, researchers were required to meet rigorous standards: their D-index had to be at least 30, ensuring a baseline of impactful scholarly contributions within the discipline. Furthermore, the majority of their top-tier publications needed to be classified in Economics and Finance, underscoring their focused expertise. Additional consideration was also given to notable awards and achievements within the field, reinforcing the ranking’s emphasis on recognized excellence.
The D-index threshold is dynamically adjusted in increments of 10 based on the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline, thereby guaranteeing that the top 1% of leading experts are incorporated. An important validation criterion is that the difference between a scientist’s overall H-index and their discipline-specific D-index remains within 30%, ensuring discipline-aligned scholarly impact.
Verification and Evaluation Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot encapsulate a scientist’s full contribution, our research team undertook thorough manual verification of all profiles included in the ranking. This process involved cross-referencing publications across a wide range of reputable sources to authenticate authorship and specialization. While the ranking itself does not formally account for the number of papers published in prestigious journals and flagship conference proceedings, these aspects remain valuable secondary indicators of a researcher’s stature and impact within Economics and Finance.
The primary indicator determining the ranking position is the D-index, calculated exclusively from data sourced through OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most respected and widely used bibliometric platforms available to the global research community.
