Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Ecology and Evolution Scientists in Iceland Ranking is based on comprehensive bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other reputable data sources. To ensure accuracy and currency, the citation-based metrics used for constructing the ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. Each scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a metric that evaluates research impact and productivity exclusively within the Ecology and Evolution discipline. This approach ensures that the ranking reflects expertise and influence specific to the field, rather than broader citation performance across unrelated areas.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
The creation of this ranking involved the examination of 279,971 scientist profiles drawn from a broad spectrum of bibliometric databases spanning all disciplines, with a focused evaluation of 6 scientists specializing in Ecology and Evolution in Iceland. To qualify for inclusion, a scientist must have a D-index of at least 30, and the majority of their tier publications must focus on Ecology and Evolution. Additionally, consideration was given to each candidate’s awards and recognized achievements within the discipline.
The D-index threshold is calibrated in increments of 10 relative to the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline, guaranteeing that the top 1% of leading researchers are captured while maintaining a consistent standard across fields. Furthermore, candidates included exhibit a proximity of 30% or less between their general H-index and D-index, underpinning the relevance of their disciplinary expertise relative to their overall research impact.
Additional Verification and Evaluation Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output, the Research.com team undertook an extensive manual verification of all scientist profiles. This involved cross-correlating publication records against a wide array of authoritative and trustworthy sources to ensure profiling accuracy. Although the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence the ranking position, it serves as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s contribution to Ecology and Evolution research.
The final ranking positions are established based on each researcher’s D-index, derived from data consolidated from OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most prominent and reliable bibliometric databases available to the research community.
