Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Earth Science Scientists in India Ranking is primarily based on comprehensive bibliometric data aggregated from prominent databases including OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple additional reputable data sources. The bibliometric data used to compute citation-based metrics for this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. A scientist's ranking position is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that considers only the publications and citation counts within the specific discipline under examination—in this case, Earth Science.
Scope of Research and Selection Criteria
The ranking process involved examining 279,971 scientist profiles sourced from a broad range of bibliometric repositories covering all scientific disciplines. Among these, 61 scientists specializing in Earth Science from India were specifically analyzed. Eligibility for inclusion in this ranking required a minimum D-index of 30, with the majority of the scientist’s tier publications concentrated in Earth Science. Additionally, notable awards and recognized achievements in the field were factored into the assessment.
The D-index threshold varies by discipline, set in increments of 10, to correspond proportionally with the total estimated number of scholars in that discipline. This ensures consistent representation of the top 1% of leading experts across fields. Moreover, to maintain disciplinary relevance, researchers with a discrepancy greater than 30% between their general H-index and their D-index were not considered, enforcing a close alignment between a scientist’s overall impact and their discipline-specific influence.
Verification and Validation Practices
The team behind this ranking acknowledges the inherent limitations of raw bibliometric data as an absolute measure of scientific productivity and impact. To uphold the integrity and reliability of the ranking, all scientist profiles underwent meticulous manual verification. Each profile was cross-correlated against publications listed in a wide array of trustworthy and authoritative sources to confirm accuracy and relevance.
While the number of publications in leading journals and prestigious conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s ranking position, it serves as a valuable secondary indicator of their scientific contribution within Earth Science. The position in the ranking is ultimately established by each researcher's D-index calculated from data predominantly sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most prominent, well-maintained bibliometric databases accessible to the research community.
