Data Sources and Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Earth Science Scientists in Bulgaria Ranking is primarily based on comprehensive bibliometric data aggregated from authoritative sources including OpenAlex and CrossRef, along with multiple other trusted bibliometric databases. These sources provide extensive coverage of scholarly publications and citations across numerous disciplines. The citation-based metrics used to construct the ranking were collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring the most recent and robust data underpin the analysis. A scientist's position in this ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a metric that exclusively considers papers and citations within the Earth Science discipline, thereby providing a focused evaluation of disciplinary impact rather than overall scholarly output.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
The ranking examined a total of 279,971 scientist profiles extracted from an array of bibliometric data sources spanning all academic disciplines. Specifically for Earth Science, 2,000 scientist profiles were analyzed in detail. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, candidates were required to have a minimum D-index of 30, and the majority of their tier publications needed to be classified as Earth Science research. Additionally, significant awards and achievements within Earth Science were considered to contextualize their scholarly influence further.
The D-index threshold is modulated by increments of 10, depending on the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline. This approach both ensures a competitive standard and guarantees inclusion of the top 1% of leading researchers in that field. Furthermore, to maintain disciplinary relevance, each scientist's general H-index and D-index had to remain within a proximity of 30% or less, confirming that their influence is concentrated substantially in Earth Science rather than diluted across unrelated domains.
Verification and Methodological Rigor
The research team behind this ranking acknowledges that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture the qualitative contributions of individual scholars. Consequently, all scientist profiles have undergone thorough manual verification and were cross-checked against publications indexed in a broad spectrum of reputable sources. While the number of papers published in prestigious journals and conference proceedings does not factor directly into the positional ranking, it serves as a valuable complementary signal of a researcher's contribution to Earth Science.
The final positions are derived exclusively from each researcher’s D-index, calculated from data retrieved through OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most prominent and widely respected bibliometric databases accessible to the global research community.
