A scientist’s placement within the ranking is determined exclusively by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that includes only those publications and citation counts directly related to the Earth Science discipline. This approach ensures that the ranking reflects discipline-specific scholarly impact rather than general research output.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
The ranking assessment involved a comprehensive examination of 279,971 scientist profiles sourced from a diverse array of bibliometric platforms spanning all academic disciplines. From this broad cohort, 69 scientists specializing in Earth Science were identified and considered for inclusion in the Belgium-specific list.
To qualify for entry into the ranking, scientists were required to meet a minimum D-index threshold of 30, ensuring that only researchers with a demonstrable and sustained impact in Earth Science were considered. Furthermore, a majority of their tier publications needed to be situated within the Earth Science discipline to maintain thematic relevance. Complementing bibliometric considerations, a scientist’s awards and professional achievements specific to Earth Science were also factored into the evaluation process.
The D-index threshold is calculated in increments of 10 relative to the estimated total number of researchers within each discipline, with parameters set to guarantee the inclusion of the top 1% of leading scholars. Additionally, only scientists whose general H-index and D-index differ by 30% or less were eligible, ensuring coherence between overall and discipline-specific research impact.
Verification Practices and Methodological Transparency
The Research.com team acknowledges that raw bibliometric data, while invaluable, cannot function as an absolute measure of scholarly output or merit. Therefore, all scientist profiles included in the ranking were manually verified and rigorously cross-correlated with publications indexed in a broad selection of trustworthy academic sources.
Although not influencing the final ranking position, the number of a researcher’s publications in prominent journals and elite conference proceedings is considered a valuable secondary indicator of their substantive contribution to Earth Science research.
The ranking positions are exclusively determined using each researcher’s D-index based on the bibliometric information gathered from OpenAlex and CrossRef, which are among the most prominent and widely recognized databases available to the global research community.
