A scientist’s position within this ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined bibliometric indicator that captures the impact of a researcher's publications strictly within the examined discipline—in this case, Computer Science. By focusing exclusively on discipline-specific papers and citation counts, the D-index delivers a more accurate reflection of a researcher's influence in their specialized field.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
The ranking rigorously examined 279,971 scientist profiles drawn from a wide array of bibliometric data sources spanning all academic disciplines, including eight scientists explicitly affiliated with Computer Science in South Africa.
To qualify for inclusion, a scientist’s D-index had to be at least 30, coupled with a majority of tier publications concentrated in the Computer Science discipline. Beyond bibliometric thresholds, awards and notable achievements within the Computer Science field were also integrated as qualitative considerations.
The D-index threshold is dynamically calibrated in increments of 10 relative to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline, guaranteeing inclusion of the top 1% of leading experts. Additionally, to maintain consistency and ensure the discipline-focused impact is well-aligned, a proximity criterion of 30% or less between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index is applied.
Verification Practices and Ranking Methodology
We recognize that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly productivity or impact. Accordingly, extensive manual verification of all scientist profiles was conducted. This process included cross-correlation of publications against a broad spectrum of reputable sources to ensure accuracy and legitimacy of the profiles presented.
While the number of publications in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a scientist’s ranking position, it serves as a valuable secondary signal reflecting their contribution to the discipline.
The ranking itself is established using each researcher’s D-index, calculated from authoritative information extracted from OpenAlex and CrossRef, which are among the most widely regarded and accessible bibliometric databases in the global research community.
