Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Biology and Biochemistry Scientists in Romania Ranking is based on a comprehensive and multifaceted data collection process. The primary bibliometric data sources used in compiling this ranking were OpenAlex and CrossRef, supported by multiple additional reputable databases to ensure robustness and coverage. All citation-based metrics utilized for determining the ranking positions were extracted on January 12, 2026. A scientist’s placement in the ranking is specifically determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), which measures citation impact strictly within the evaluated discipline, including only publications and citations relevant to Biology and Biochemistry.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
The ranking process examined a total of 188,046 scientist profiles drawn from an extensive range of bibliometric data sources, spanning all academic disciplines. Among these, 4,000 scientists from the Biology and Biochemistry fields were specifically assessed for inclusion in the current ranking edition. To qualify, a researcher was required to have a D-index of at least 40. Additionally, the majority of their tier publications needed to be within the domain of Biology and Biochemistry. The evaluation also considered researchers’ awards and achievements relevant to these fields.
The threshold D-index for considering top researchers is strategically set in increments of 10, adapting to the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline. This approach ensures that the ranking selectively incorporates the top 1% of leading experts per field. A further quality control metric mandates that the proximity between a researcher’s overall H-index and their D-index should not exceed 30%, thereby affirming that the specialist impact is well-aligned with their general citation profile.
Additional Verification Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot provide a complete evaluation of scientific output, the Research.com team applied rigorous manual verification to all scientist profiles. This process involved cross-correlating data with publication records across a broad spectrum of trusted and authoritative sources to validate the accuracy and relevance of the assessments.
While the number of papers published in prominent journals and major conference proceedings was not a direct factor in determining ranking position, it serves as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s research contribution within their specialization. The final ranking positions are firmly established based on each researcher's D-index as derived from OpenAlex and CrossRef data—two of the most prominent, extensively curated bibliometric databases available to the research community.
