Overview of Harish-Chandra Research Institute

The Harish-Chandra Research Institute (HRI), established in 1975, is a premier public research institution located in Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad), India. Initially founded as the Mehta Research Institute of Mathematics and Mathematical Physics, HRI was renamed in honor of the eminent mathematician Harish-Chandra in 2000. As a unit of the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, HRI is recognized for its research-intensive milieu. With a small, highly selective community—comprising approximately 70 PhD students, 40 postdoctoral fellows, and over 35 faculty members—HRI offers an intimate academic environment focused solely on research excellence in foundational sciences.
