Bilkent University is one of the leading universities in Turkey and the first non-profit private institution for higher education in the country. While a relatively new university compared to other popular universities in the area, it has become known for the competency of its business and engineering programs as well as its high research output. In addition, the university offers plenty of scholarships, with around 63% of the student population enrolled in one.
Bilkent is organized into 10 faculties and over 30 departments across disciplines like Art, Business, Economics, Education, Engineering, and Science. It offers around 29 undergraduate and 59 graduate programs, among which the most highly regarded ones are Business Management, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Materials Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering and Technology, and Economics.
Research in Bilkent is conducted in its faculties and 16 centers, covering fields like brain research, global issues, Turkish history, economics, and materials science. The university is also involved in projects funded by third-party organizations like the European Union and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey. Meanwhile, its researchers hold around 12 national and 60 international patents. Bilkent also has its own technopark, which houses more than 220 tech companies and six facilities for research.
Located in Ankara, Bilkent’s main campus features a concert hall that can accommodate around 700 people and dormitories with a collective capacity of over 4,300 students. Its library has a collection of over 1.84 million books, coursed through around 189 databases, and houses an art gallery. Learners can join any of the over 100 student organizations on campus and avail of the university’s health services, which is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Established in 1984, Bilkent University was founded by distinguished Turkish professor İhsan Doğramacı in an effort to build an institution that raised the academic and research standards in Ankara. Plans were made as early as the late 1960s, with many of the buildings predating the university itself. In 1986, the school admitted its first students, composed of 386 undergraduates and postgraduates.
Today, Bilkent welcomes around 12,000 students and 800 teaching staff. It has partnered with over 330 universities from all over the world for its exchange program. Meanwhile, its faculty has won numerous national awards for their research and teaching, including several winners of the TÜBİTAK Awards, Turkish Academy of Sciences Awards, and the Sedat Simavi Foundation Science Award.
Bilkent’s notable alumni include Emrah Yucel (graphic designer), Gizem Girişmen (archer), Erdem Başçı (economist), Binnur Kaya (actress), Nasuh Mahruki (mountain climber), and Hilmi Volkan Demir (scientist).
Bilkent stands as a center for learning and multidisciplinary growth, as it encourages students to become life-long learners and contributors to society’s advancement. The school also promotes extracurricular growth through its renowned programs in sports, music, and performance arts.

Our research was coordinated by Imed Bouchrika, PhD, a computer scientist with a well-established record
of collaboration on a number of international research projects with different partners from the academic
community. His role was to make sure all data remained unbiased, accurate, and up-to-date.
