The University of Salerno (UNISAEN) is a state-supported university with campuses in Fisciano and Baronnisi, Italy. UNISAEN was founded by royal decree from King Victor Emmanuel III in 1968 but its history goes as far back as the 8th century. It is a modern and dynamic university with strong ties to the local community while responding to international challenges. It is one of the most important scientific and cultural institutions in southern Italy. UNISAEN’s mission is to implement educational and research programs, create linkages with the community while promoting sustainability, and providing students and the community with a rich scientific and cultural heritage.

UNISAEN offers more than 30 bachelor’s and over 40 master’s degree programs that are taught across 17 departments. They also offer PhD programs, double degrees with global partner institutions, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate courses that are taught in English.

UNISAEN traces its roots to the Schola Medica Salernitana, a prominent medical school during the Medieval Period. However, the school was closed by royal decree in 1811. In 1944, King Victor Emmanuel III issued a decree founding the Istituto Universitario di Magistero “Giovanni Cuomo.” In 1968, the institution became state-owned and changed its name to Facoltà di Magistero dell’Università degli Studi di Salerno. From the 1970s to the early 2000s, the university added more faculties until it grew to what it is today.

Notable alumni who have walked the halls of UNISAEN include Vincenzo De Luca, one of the longest-serving mayors in Italy; Italian journalist, TV host, and presenter Michele Santoro; and operatic soprano Carmen Giannattasio.

UNISAEN has been cited as one of the country’s top large state universities, according to Italian publications. Globally, it has received placement within the top 400 to 1,000 universities by various academic ranking publications. It has also been included within the top 400 rungs by an environment-focused world university ranking organization. UNISAEN was the only university in Italy’s southwest Campania region to be included in the list.

Recently, the university has signed a memorandum of understanding with a Maltese company for putting up a joint incubator for start-ups in Malta. The incubator is part of UNISAEN’s internationalization strategy. It is expected to drive technology transfer and investment in Malta and the Mediterranean region.

The university has also conducted crucial research on environment-friendly, antimicrobial face masks and the presence of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) in the water cycle.
