Overview

Chongqing University is a first-class research university and a National Key University in the Municipality of Chongqing in the People’s Republic of China. It was founded in 1929 with the assistance of Liu Xiang, a warlord overseeing the Szechuan province. The institution became a national university in 1943 with colleges teaching science, liberal arts, law, engineering, and medicine. A restructuring in 1952 transformed it into an engineering-focused university offering multidisciplinary programs.

Chongqing University has seven faculties: Humanities, Social Sciences, Science, Information Science and Technology, Engineering, Built Environment, and Medicine. These are further subdivided into 36 schools and departments, such as the School of Foreign Languages and Cultures, the School of Life Sciences, and the College of Aerospace Engineering. These offer 96 bachelor’s degree programs, 115 graduate programs, and 42 doctoral programs. Additionally, the institution has 19 professional degree programs. It has 35 undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate programs taught in English as well.

Instructions for classes in all levels are conducted in four campuses across 347 hectares. Within this wide area are state and national key laboratories, collaborative research centers, and a laboratory for the key disciplines of national defense. Some of these are the State Key Laboratory of Power Transmission Equipment and System, the Collaborative Innovation Center for Local Government Management, and the Research Center for Language Cognition and Language Application of Chongqing University.

Research groups of Chongqing University have undertaken projects that were supported by national agencies, such as the National Natural Science Foundation and the National Social Science Foundation. Likewise, the institution has conducted research under various national programs, like the 973 Program and the 863 Program. The results of these research have led to over 3,500 patents. Plus, over 26,000 research papers authored or co-authored by university researchers are indexed by Science Citation Index Expanded and Engineering Index.

Chongqing University’s research has won more than 280 science awards. Fourteen of these were awarded by national government institutions, while 35 are from the ministerial and provincial government units. The institution has been granted over 3,000 patents as well.

The institution has partnerships with 124 colleges and universities in over 20 countries including Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Russia. It has agreements with foreign organizations and research centers, like Microsoft, Siemens, the Meishi Power Group of Hong Kong, and the Tokyo Foundation. Through its international partnerships, Chongqing University is able to conduct extensive research projects.
