Overview

The University of Delaware is the biggest university in Delaware and is known for its high research output, the high employability rate of its graduates, and its unique classification as a public-private university. The school also has an art conservation course, which is available in only three other universities in the United States. Moreover, Delaware is an R1 Doctoral University as well as a space-, sea-, and land-grant research organization.

Delaware is divided into 10 colleges and schools, focusing on areas like Business, Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, Engineering, and Health Sciences. It offers around 140 bachelor’s programs, 115 master’s programs, 44 doctoral programs, and four associate programs. Among these, the most prominent ones are Chemical Engineering, Materials Sciences, Environmental Studies, Linguistics, Engineering and Technology, Agriculture, and Chemistry. The school also has a popular music program.

Research in the university is conducted in around 80 centers and then condensed into eight initiatives: art conservation, biopharmaceuticals, composite materials, data science, disaster research, energy, environment, and rehabilitation. From 2010 to 2020, the university has accomplished more than 480 invention disclosures, 130 issued patents, 60 issued licenses, and 30 startups formed.

Delaware’s main campus is located in Newark and has campuses in Georgetown, Lewes, Wilmington, and Dover. While it houses its own dormitories, the university has also forged partnerships with local hotels and other providers of lodging to accommodate more learners. Established in 1833, the University of Delaware was once a small school in Pennsylvania, dedicated to educating clergymen in 1743. It relocated to Newark in 1765 and was able to grant college degrees in 1834. It merged with a women’s college in 1921 to become the University of Delaware that we know today.

By 2020, Delaware has opened its doors to more than 18,600 undergraduates, 4,200 postgraduate students, 700 professional students, and 4,700 employees. Its alumni list has three people who signed the country’s declaration of independence, a Nobel laureate, a Tony Award winner, and a former United States vice president. Meanwhile, its faculty list is populated with renowned scientists, authors, and artists.

Delaware’s notable alumni include Joe Biden (U.S. vice president), Chris Christie (New Jersey governor), Joe Flacco (American football player), Tom Carper (U.S. senator), Daniel Nathans (microbiologist), and Raven (professional wrestler).

Delaware promotes the free exchange of ideas and cultivates learning for the benefit of local and international societies through academics and research. Besides academics, the university offers a lot of extracurricular activities like writing for school publications, broadcasting news on the school’s radio station, or joining any of its athletics programs.
