Data Sources Utilized in the Research.com Best Political Science Universities in United States Ranking (4th Edition)
The 4th edition of the Research.com Best Political Science Universities in the United States Ranking is built upon rigorous bibliometric data sourced primarily from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other trustworthy data sources. The citation-based metrics were derived from data collected as of 2024-11-27. Institutions’ positions in the ranking are determined by aggregating the D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all affiliated scholars whose main area of research is Political Science. The D-index is calculated exclusively from publications and citation data pertaining to Political Science, ensuring a focused evaluation of each institution’s disciplinary output and influence.
Research Scope and Scholar Inclusion Criteria
The ranking methodology involved the examination of 279,971 scholar profiles from across various bibliometric data sources. For Political Science specifically, 2,158 scientists were analyzed. To ensure that only the most impactful academic contributors were included, a minimum D-index threshold of 20 was set for consideration, requiring that the majority of a candidate’s publications fall within Political Science. Scholar evaluation also considered notable awards and achievements in the field.
Additionally, the D-index threshold evolves in increments of 10, contingent on the estimated number of scholars per discipline, while consistently guaranteeing inclusion of the overall top 1% of leading Political Science experts. To preserve the disciplinary focus of the ranking, the proximity between a scientist’s overall H-index and their D-index is maintained at a ratio of 30% or less. These protocols ensure that listed scientists are genuinely recognized for their specific contribution to Political Science. Awards and achievements continue to serve as important secondary validation of a scholar’s impact and standing within the discipline.
Verification Practices and Ranking Procedures
Researchers at Research.com recognize that raw bibliometric data serve only as a foundational resource and are never adequate as sole evaluative instruments. Accordingly, every scientist profile included in the ranking has undergone thorough manual verification and cross-correlation against publication records in numerous reputable sources. Although not a formal metric influencing the ranking, the number of papers published in leading journals and conference proceedings is acknowledged as an important secondary indicator of a scientist’s research contribution.
The position in the ranking is established based on each scholar’s H-index, calculated using data from OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most authoritative bibliometric databases available to the global research community.
