Data Sources and Methodology
The 4th edition of the Research.com Best Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Universities in Iran, Islamic Republic Of Ranking has been meticulously compiled using data from some of the world’s most reputable bibliometric databases, primarily OpenAlex and CrossRef, in addition to multiple other data sources. The bibliometric data employed for devising citation-based performance metrics were gathered on 2024-11-27.
A university's position in this ranking is determined by the sum of the D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all ranking scholars whose primary publication area is in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and who are affiliated with the institution in question. The D-index is calculated based solely on publications and citation data specific to Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, ensuring a high discipline relevance and accuracy.
Scope of Research
For this edition, an extensive scale of scholar profiles was examined—279,971 scientist profiles from various bibliometric sources were screened, out of which 66,807 researchers specializing in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering were analyzed in detail. To qualify, each scientist needed a D-index threshold of at least 30, with the majority of their influential work predominantly in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Furthermore, noteworthy awards and achievements in the discipline were taken into account.
The D-index threshold for identifying top researchers is dynamically set in increments of 10, based on the total number of scholars estimated for each discipline. This approach guarantees the inclusion of the top 1% of leading scholars in the list. Additionally, a scholar’s D-index must be within 30% proximity of their general H-index, ensuring specialization. Accomplishments and awards further enhance an individual’s standing.
Verification and Data Integrity
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone should not serve as the sole measure of scholarly output, all profiles included in the ranking underwent manual verification. This process involved rigorous cross-correlation against publications indexed in a wide spectrum of credible sources.
Although not a direct ranking metric, the volume of papers in prominent journals and conference proceedings is recognized as an important secondary indicator of a scientist's contribution to the field. The final ranking position is determined based on each researcher’s H-index, as reported by OpenAlex and CrossRef—both acknowledged as authoritative and comprehensive bibliometric databases by the research community worldwide.
