Crime Rate Statistics in the U.S.

Looking at the police records managements system, we see peaks and lows in the violent crime offense rate in the United States from 2010 to 2020, suggesting the lack of a permanent solution to crimes in the country.

It’s one are where the need for the best public sector software is vitally needed. In 2010, there were 404.5 incidents per 100,000 people, the highest within the timeline (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2020). For the said period, we see the lowest dip in crime rate in 2014 at 361.6 per 100,000. From 2014, there was a gradual increase again in crime incidents, peaking at 397.5 in 2016. Towards 2019, the crime rate decreased to 380.8 before climbing up to 398.5 again in 2020. While the latest figure is still lower than 2010’s, the roller-coaster trend of crime rates reveals an incoherent campaign in the country’s fight against violent crimes, particularly crimes against students.

Crime Rate: U.S. vs. World

Worldwide, the U.S. is not faring well, too. With 47.81% crime rate in 2020, the country is 56th among countries with the highest crime incidence (World Population Review, 2022). Compared to other rich democracies such as Australia’s 43.03%, Canada’s 41.89%, Germany’s 35.79%, Japan’s 22.19% and Switzerland’s 21.62%, the U.S. has a long way to go in public safety.

Walking Alone at Night

The OECD Better Life Index findings seemed to corroborate the state of public safety in the U.S. The report surveyed people worldwide on “feeling safe walking alone at night.” The U.S. ranked 22nd with a 76.15% rating. Compare that to: United Kingdom at 17th (78.36%), Canada at 18th (77.5%), Japan at 20th (76.75%) and Switzerland at 5th (85.9%) (OECD, n.d.).

In terms of homicide rate per 100,000 people, the U.S. ranked 36th with six incidents on average (OECD, n.d.). Again, comparing that to Canada at 29th with 1.2 homicide, Switzerland at 2nd with 0.3 homicide, and Japan and the United Kingdom with 0.2 homicide incident apiece, the U.S. has room to improve.
