Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Social Sciences and Humanities Scientists in Ghana Ranking is primarily based on comprehensive bibliometric data sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other trusted bibliometric databases. The citation-based metrics used to devise the ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their Discipline H-index (D-index), a refined metric that includes only the papers and citation data relevant to the specific discipline under examination. This approach ensures a focused and accurate representation of impact within the Social Sciences and Humanities fields.
Scope of Research and Eligibility Criteria
Our analysis encompassed 279,971 scientist profiles obtained from a diverse range of bibliometric data sources, covering all disciplines. Within this vast dataset, 3,000 scientists affiliated with the Social Sciences and Humanities disciplines were specifically examined. To qualify for inclusion in this ranking, a scientist’s D-index had to meet a minimum threshold of 30, and the majority of their tier publications were required to be within the Social Sciences and Humanities domain. In addition to bibliometric performance, the evaluation considered scientists’ awards and recognized achievements in the field.
The D-index threshold is calibrated in increments of 10, commensurate with the total number of scholars estimated per discipline, while rigorously maintaining the inclusion of the top 1% of leading researchers. Furthermore, it is required that the proximity between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index does not exceed 30%, ensuring consistency and relevance in disciplinary impact measurement.
Verification and Methodological Rigor
The researchers responsible for compiling the ranking acknowledge that raw bibliometric data alone cannot provide an absolute evaluation of scholarly output. Consequently, all scientist profiles underwent manual verification processes and were cross-correlated against publications registered in a broad array of reputable, authoritative sources. While not a factor directly influencing the ranking position, the volume of papers published in prestigious journals and high-impact conference proceedings serves as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s contribution to research within the Social Sciences and Humanities.
Positions in the ranking are ultimately established through the D-index as calculated with bibliometric information derived from OpenAlex and CrossRef — two of the most prominent and widely recognized databases accessible to the global research community.
