The bibliometric data underpinning the citation-based metrics used for the ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. A researcher’s position within this ranking is determined through their D-index (Discipline H-index), a metric designed to reflect the impact of a scientist’s work strictly within the examined discipline — Psychology in this case. This means that only publications and citations relevant to Psychology contribute to the calculation of the D-index, thereby allowing for a focused evaluation of disciplinary expertise.
Scope and Criteria of the Ranking
The ranking involved an extensive examination of 279,971 scientist profiles drawn from a variety of bibliometric data sources, spanning all scientific disciplines. Specifically, 1,000 scientists working within the field of Psychology were identified and considered for inclusion in the Psychology ranking.
To qualify for the ranking, each scientist had to meet a minimum D-index threshold of 30, ensuring that only researchers with a significant impact within Psychology were considered. Additionally, a majority of their tier publications needed to be directly related to Psychology. Beyond bibliometric measures, scientists’ awards and other notable achievements in Psychology were also factored into the evaluation process for a holistic assessment.
The D-index threshold for selection is dynamically adjusted in increments of 10 according to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline. This practice guarantees incorporation of the top 1% of leading experts per field. Furthermore, a proximity criterion is applied requiring that there be no more than a 30% difference between a scientist’s general H-index and their discipline-specific D-index. This ensures that the ranking prioritizes researchers with demonstrated focus and impact within Psychology.
Verification and Validation Practices
Recognizing the limitations of raw bibliometric data, the researchers behind this ranking emphasize that such data should not be used as an absolute measure of scholarly output. To enhance accuracy and credibility, all scientist profiles included were manually verified and cross-correlated against a broad range of trustworthy publication sources.
While the position in the ranking is established through the D-index based on data collected from OpenAlex and CrossRef, the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings serves as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s contributions within Psychology. Although this secondary metric does not directly influence ranking positions, it helps to provide additional context and validation of scholarly impact.
