Data Sources and Methodology
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Political Science Scientists in Estonia Ranking is primarily based on comprehensive bibliometric data compiled from leading scholarly databases, including OpenAlex and CrossRef, among multiple other reputable sources. The citation-based metrics, which form the foundation of the ranking, were collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring that our analysis is both current and reflective of the most recent academic contributions.
A scientist’s position within the ranking is determined by their Discipline H-index, or D-index, which specifically measures the impact of publications and citations only within the examined discipline — in this case, Political Science. This approach ensures the ranking accurately reflects scholarly influence within the relevant field, rather than general scholarly output.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
The ranking process involved a thorough examination of 279,971 scientist profiles identified across a wide array of bibliometric data sources representing all academic disciplines. Within Political Science specifically, we analyzed profiles of 1,000 scientists to identify leading experts in Estonia.
To qualify for inclusion in this ranking, a researcher’s D-index had to be at least 20, and the majority of their tier publications needed to be in Political Science. Additionally, scientists’ awards and professional achievements within the field were also taken into consideration to ensure recognition of impactful contributions beyond pure citation metrics.
The D-index threshold is set in increments of 10, calibrated according to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline. This methodology guarantees that the top 1% of leading scholars in Political Science are incorporated into the list, providing a competitive and meaningful ranking. Furthermore, we ensure there is a maximum proximity of 30% or less between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index, maintaining discipline-specific relevance in the evaluation.
Verification and Quality Assurance
At Research.com, we recognize that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute tool for evaluating scholarly output. In this spirit, each scientist profile was subjected to meticulous manual verification and cross-correlation against publications indexed in a wide range of trusted and authoritative sources. This rigorous process greatly enhances the credibility and accuracy of the ranking.
While not a direct factor influencing ranking positions, the volume of publications in prominent journals and leading conference proceedings is regarded as a valuable secondary indicator of a researcher’s engagement and influence within the Political Science community.
The position of researchers in the ranking is ultimately established using their D-index derived from data aggregated primarily from OpenAlex and CrossRef — two of the most prominent and widely respected bibliometric databases available to the global research community.
