A scientist's position in this ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric which accounts exclusively for papers and citations within the specific discipline under examination. This approach allows for a precise and discipline-focused evaluation of each researcher’s scientific impact.
Scope of Research and Eligibility Criteria
The ranking was developed through the evaluation of 279,971 scientist profiles aggregated from a diverse array of bibliometric data sources spanning all scientific disciplines. Specifically, 1,xxx scientists working within the domain of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering were identified and assessed.
To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist’s D-index had to be at least 30, ensuring that only researchers with a significant disciplinary impact are considered. Furthermore, the majority of a qualified scientist’s tier publications had to be substantively related to Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. In addition to citation metrics, scientists’ awards and professional achievements within the field were taken into account as complementary indicators of excellence.
The threshold for the D-index depends on the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline, increasing in increments of 10 to correspond with the discipline’s size. This methodology is designed to consistently include the top 1% of leading scholars. An important criterion to maintain disciplinary specificity is that the proximity between a scientist’s overall H-index and their D-index should not exceed 30%, thereby affirming a clear connection to the field.
Additional Verification Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot provide a definitive measure of scientific output and quality, the Research.com team has incorporated rigorous manual verification procedures. Each scientist’s profile was meticulously reviewed and cross-correlated against publications indexed in a wide range of trustworthy academic sources.
Although the number of papers published in prestigious journals and major conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s ranking position, it serves as a valuable secondary indicator of their contributions to Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering research.
Ultimately, the ranking positions are assigned based on each researcher’s D-index derived from information collated through OpenAlex and CrossRef, the foremost bibliometric databases recognized globally for their reliability and comprehensiveness.
