Data Sources and Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Scientists in Bulgaria Ranking has been developed using comprehensive bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, complemented by multiple other reputable data providers. These databases offer extensive coverage of scholarly articles, citation records, and publication metadata, which serve as the foundation for the citation-based metrics used in the ranking. The bibliometric data used to devise these metrics was collected on January 12, 2026.
A scientist’s position within this ranking is determined based on their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that exclusively considers a researcher’s publications and citations within the specific discipline of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. This ensures a focused and discipline-relevant evaluation of scientific impact.
Scope of Research and Eligibility Criteria
The ranking process began with an examination of 279,971 scientist profiles identified from a wide array of bibliometric data sources across all disciplines. Within this broad pool, 1,000 scientists specializing in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering were specifically assessed.
To qualify for inclusion, a scientist’s D-index in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering must be at least 30. Additionally, the majority of their tier publications—those of the highest scientific caliber—had to be rooted in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering research. The evaluation also took into account the scientists’ awards and achievements relevant to the discipline.
The D-index threshold for considering top researchers is adjusted in increments of 10, reflecting the total estimated population of scholars in each discipline. This dynamic thresholding ensures that the top 1% of leading scholars within Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering are incorporated into the list. Further, candidates were only considered if the proximity between their general H-index and their D-index was 30% or less, promoting consistency between overall and discipline-specific research influence.
Verification and Validation Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture the value and quality of scholarly output, the research team conducting this ranking applied rigorous manual verification processes. Each scientist profile was carefully cross-correlated with publications listed in a broad range of trustworthy and authoritative sources to verify accuracy and relevance.
Although the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly affect a researcher’s rank, it serves as an important secondary indicator of scientific contribution within Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
The final ranking positions are assigned based on the D-index derived from integrated data sources, chiefly OpenAlex and CrossRef, which are among the most prominent and widely recognized bibliometric databases available for scholarly assessment.
