The ranking is primarily based on bibliometric data sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, which are widely recognized and authoritative repositories in the scholarly research community. These platforms provide extensive coverage of authorship and citation metrics, essential for accurately assessing research impact. In addition to these primary sources, multiple supplementary data providers were consulted to enhance the completeness and accuracy of the dataset. The bibliometric data underpinning all citation-based metrics were collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring currency and relevance of the evaluation.
A key metric used to establish a scientist’s position within the ranking is the D-index (Discipline H-index). The D-index uniquely filters a researcher’s publications and citations to include only those relevant to Chemistry, thereby offering a focused and discipline-specific measure of scholarly impact rather than a general h-index score.
Scope of Research and Selection Criteria
The ranking process examined a total of 279,971 scientist profiles aggregated from diverse bibliometric databases, encompassing all academic disciplines. Within this broad spectrum, 158 researchers specifically identified with the field of Chemistry were assessed in detail.
To qualify for inclusion, a scientist was required to have a D-index of at least 40, reflecting a high level of disciplinary impact. Additionally, the majority of a scientist’s tier publications needed to be clearly categorized within the area of Chemistry. Recognition of awards and notable achievements in Chemistry also factored into considerations. The threshold for the D-index is adjusted in increments of 10 relative to the estimated total number of scholars per discipline, with the deliberate intent to include the top 1% of leading researchers. Importantly, candidates were also evaluated to ensure that the proximity between their overall H-index and their Chemistry-specific D-index did not exceed 30%, safeguarding the discipline-specific relevance of their scholarly output.
Verification and Validation Practices
Understanding that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as the definitive measure of a researcher’s contributions, the ranking team applied rigorous manual verification processes. Each scientist profile was meticulously cross-referenced against publications indexed in a wide range of reputable sources to eliminate inaccuracies and confirm subject area relevance.
While the number of publications in leading journals and conference proceedings does not directly determine a researcher’s rank, this factor is considered a valuable secondary indicator of scholarly influence and contribution within Chemistry.
The final ranking positions are derived solely from the D-index values computed from OpenAlex and CrossRef data, underscoring the reliance on trustworthy and openly accessible bibliometric platforms recognized globally by the research community.
