Data Sources Utilized for the Ranking
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Business and Management Scientists in Japan Ranking is primarily grounded on extensive bibliometric data derived from OpenAlex and CrossRef. These two platforms serve as the cornerstone for our citation-based metrics, offering comprehensive and up-to-date scholarly publication and citation information. In addition, multiple other reputable data sources have been leveraged to enrich and validate the dataset, ensuring robustness and accuracy in the evaluation process. The bibliometric data used to devise the citation-based metrics reflected in this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. A researcher’s position within the ranking is determined exclusively by their D-index (Discipline H-index), which calculates impact by considering only those publications and citations pertinent to the examined discipline, thereby refining focus to discipline-specific scholarly contributions.
Scope of Research Considered
For this ranking, a total of 279,971 scientist profiles identified across a broad range of bibliometric databases and encompassing all academic disciplines were systematically examined. Among these profiles, 5 researchers specializing in Business and Management were specifically analyzed for inclusion. To qualify for the ranking, candidates were required to have a D-index of at least 30, with the preponderance of their tier publications demonstrating clear relevance to the Business and Management domain. Additionally, individual awards and notable achievements in this field were factored into the selection criteria.
The threshold for the D-index is dynamically set in increments of 10 relative to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline, a mechanism that ensures the ranking consistently captures the top 1% of leading researchers. Furthermore, a candidate’s D-index must not differ from their overall H-index by more than 30%, maintaining proximity between general research impact and discipline-specific impact.
Additional Verification Practices
Our team recognizes that raw bibliometric data, though invaluable, cannot function as a solitary or absolute instrument to evaluate the scholarly output of researchers. Therefore, every scientist profile included in the ranking underwent rigorous manual verification. Profiles were meticulously cross-correlated against publication records curated from a diverse range of trustworthy academic sources to confirm authenticity and relevance.
While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s ranking position, it provides an important secondary indication of their scholarly contributions within Business and Management.
It is important to highlight that positioning in this ranking is fundamentally based on each researcher’s D-index as gathered from OpenAlex and CrossRef—recognized as the most authoritative bibliometric repositories accessible to the global research community.
