What Are Paralegal Programs With Relativity Coursework?

Relativity is software used to organize, search, review, and produce electronically stored information in legal matters. E-discovery is the process of identifying and handling that information for litigation or investigations. A paralegal program with Relativity coursework may teach the process, demonstrate the platform, or let students perform tasks in it. Those are different educational experiences.

The coursework might appear in an associate degree, bachelor's degree, post-degree certificate, or continuing-education course. A paralegal certificate documents completion of a course of study; it is not, by itself, a professional certification. If you are starting with college-level legal study, a guide to online legal studies associate degrees can help you compare the broader credential before evaluating any software elective. Neither that degree nor Relativity training qualifies a graduate to practice law as an attorney.

Which Paralegal Programs Offer Hands-On Relativity Access?

A school should be described as offering hands-on Relativity access only when current, course-specific information confirms that students use the software themselves. A catalog description alone cannot establish that access, and software arrangements can change between terms. There is no reliable nationwide roster of programs whose current students all receive it; this guide therefore does not label unverified schools as hands-on options.

The distinctions below show what different descriptions of "Relativity coursework" can - and cannot - establish. They make it easier to compare schools that use the same marketing phrase for different experiences.

What the school confirmsExperience it establishesKey limitation
Relativity appears in a syllabus or readingConceptual exposureNo student software use is established
An instructor demonstrates the platformObservation of a workflowStudents may never perform a task themselves
Students receive logins and complete graded tasks in RelativityHands-on courseworkThe scope and duration of practice may still be limited

For any school on your shortlist, request the current syllabus and written confirmation from the department or instructor. Ask whether access is provided to every enrolled student, whether the work uses Relativity rather than screenshots or a different tool, and whether the arrangement will apply to your intended term. An instructor demonstration is useful, but it should not be presented as individual access.

How Do You Compare Relativity Coursework Across Paralegal Programs?

Compare the work students actually complete, not just the number of times a platform is named in a course description. Transfer-friendly online paralegal bachelor's programs may be worth considering if you also need a degree, but transfer policy and software access are separate questions.

Send each program the same questions and retain its answers. This sequence tests whether the promised experience fits both your learning goal and your schedule.

  1. Will I personally log in to Relativity, and for which course and term is that access confirmed?
  2. What graded tasks will I complete - for example, searching, coding, quality checks, or preparing a production?
  3. Will I work with a realistic practice dataset, and will an instructor review my decisions?
  4. How many scheduled lab sessions, campus visits, or supervised meetings are required?
  5. Is software access included in stated charges, and when does it end?

Strong evidence includes a current assignment description and a clear explanation of how student work is assessed. Treat "industry-standard software covered" as a red flag if staff cannot say whether students get logins. A short lab may be worthwhile, but it is not equivalent to sustained work across a matter's discovery stages.

Is Relativity Software Training Available Online and On Campus?

Either format can support hands-on training if students have working access and receive feedback. An online program might use a remote training environment; an on-campus course might use a computer lab. The delivery label does not establish what happens inside the course.

In particular, online does not mean asynchronous. A remote lab may require live attendance, timed access, group work, or a scheduled assessment. Campus students should check lab hours and whether they can practice outside class. If the program also requires an internship, ask who arranges it and whether its schedule is compatible with work; do not assume the internship uses Relativity or can be completed remotely.

What Relativity Skills Do Paralegal Students Learn?

Depending on the assignments, students may learn to navigate a review workspace, search documents, apply coding decisions, check document sets for consistency, and understand how materials are prepared for production. They should also learn why preserving information, protecting confidential data, and following attorney instructions matter. A course that teaches these tasks through a practice matter offers a different experience from one that only defines the terms.

Coursework can build familiarity, but it does not establish workplace proficiency or award a vendor certification. Relativity certification is a separate credential with requirements set by its issuing organization. Ask whether the school's work is intended as general exposure, assessed software practice, or preparation for a particular external exam - and request evidence for the last claim.

Are Paralegal Programs With Relativity Coursework Accredited?

Relativity coursework has no separate accreditation status. Institutional accreditation concerns the college or other eligible institution; American Bar Association approval concerns a qualifying paralegal education program. An institution can be accredited without its paralegal program being ABA-approved, and a technology elective does not change either status.

Check institutional accreditation through the institution's current disclosures and its recognized accreditor. If ABA approval matters to you or a prospective employer, check the specific program in the ABA's current paralegal program directory rather than relying on a school-wide claim. The ABA does not certify individual paralegals. Employer preferences and any state-specific rules should be checked separately.

What Are the Admission Requirements for Relativity-Focused Paralegal Programs?

Admission depends on the underlying credential, not on Relativity. An entry-level degree program, a post-degree paralegal certificate, and a stand-alone professional-development course can have different prerequisites. Check the current admissions page for required prior education, transcripts, application deadlines, and any prerequisites for the particular technology course. Do not assume you can take an elective immediately after admission.

If you already hold a bachelor's degree, first decide whether your goal is paralegal work or broader business-law knowledge. For the latter, exploring faster business law graduate programs may be relevant, but a graduate legal studies program is not a substitute for hands-on e-discovery practice and does not qualify you to practice as an attorney.

How Long Do Relativity Paralegal Programs Take, and What Do They Cost?

There is no standard completion time or price for "a Relativity paralegal program": the software may occupy one unit in a course, a full course, or part of a longer degree or certificate. Compare the full credential's required courses and sequence with the amount of actual software practice. A shorter course may meet a targeted training need; a degree may be more appropriate if you also need foundational legal education.

Request a written estimate covering tuition, mandatory fees, books, technology charges, required equipment, and any travel or internship expenses. Confirm whether software access costs extra. A lower advertised course price is not necessarily the lower-cost route if it requires prerequisites or does not provide the credential you need. If you are considering graduate study instead, compare its full cost and career purpose using online legal studies master's tuition and career prospects; it serves a different goal from a focused Relativity lab.

Ask the financial aid office about eligibility for the specific program before assuming aid is available. Credit-bearing status alone does not establish eligibility, and noncredit training should not be treated as automatically eligible for federal aid.

What Careers Can Relativity Training Prepare Paralegal Graduates For?

Relevant roles may include litigation paralegal, legal assistant supporting discovery, e-discovery project assistant, or document-review support specialist. Duties vary by employer: one position may involve organizing records and coordinating with attorneys, while another focuses on review workflows and quality checks. Paralegals work under attorney supervision and cannot independently provide legal services that would constitute the unauthorized practice of law.

Relativity practice can help demonstrate an interest in litigation technology, particularly when you can explain specific assignments and the decisions you made. It does not replace legal research, writing, procedure, confidentiality training, or job experience. If your goal is a non-JD legal-knowledge degree rather than litigation support, comparing legal studies master's pathways and potential earnings addresses that separate decision; those degrees do not themselves qualify graduates to become attorneys.

Do Relativity Skills Increase Paralegal Salary and Job Prospects?

Relativity skills can be relevant to employers handling electronic discovery, but there is no reliable basis for promising a salary increase from coursework alone. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports median annual pay of $62,890 in May 2025 for paralegals and legal assistants and projects 0% growth for 2025-2035, with about 40,800 openings per year. Those figures cover the occupation broadly, not Relativity users or new graduates; openings do not guarantee a job for an individual applicant.

For a hiring decision, demonstrable work matters more than an unqualified software claim. Choose substantial hands-on coursework if the roles you want mention e-discovery and the added cost is reasonable. If they mainly require general paralegal skills, prioritize a sound legal curriculum and relevant experience; targeted software training could come later. Before enrolling, compare local job postings with the school's assignments and confirm that the access promised for your term is in writing.

Other Things You Should Know About Law & Paralegal

Can students use real client documents in a Relativity class?

Do not assume so. Ask what practice dataset the school uses and how it protects confidential information. Realistic, fictional or appropriately prepared materials can support useful exercises without exposing client records.

Will I keep my Relativity login after graduation?

Access depends on the school's arrangement and may end when the course ends. Get the end date in writing if continued practice matters to you.

Will I need a particular computer for an online lab?

Possibly. Request the current browser, operating-system, internet, and any remote-access requirements before registering, especially if you use a Chromebook or shared computer.

Will skills learned in Relativity transfer to other e-discovery tools?

Concepts such as search, review decisions, and quality control can be useful across platforms. Menus and workflows differ, so expect to learn an employer's particular tools and procedures.
