Overview: Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology
Founded in 2003 through the merger of Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine (est. 1875) and Tokyo University of Fisheries (est. 1888), the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT) is Japan’s only national university dedicated entirely to the interdisciplinary study of the oceans. Based in Tokyo, Japan, TUMSAT operates two primary campuses—Shinagawa and Etchujima—and serves approximately 3,000 students supported by more than 250 faculty members. As a public and research-intensive institution, TUMSAT upholds a strong commitment to both advanced scholarship and high-quality teaching, focusing on marine science, engineering, and technology.
TUMSAT distinguishes itself through robust academic programs spanning marine biosciences, maritime technology, ocean engineering, and fisheries science. Notably, it offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate degrees that emphasize interdisciplinary approaches—integrating engineering, natural sciences, and management within marine contexts. The university is renowned for research in maritime safety, ocean resource utilization, and environmental sustainability, with active collaborations across leading global consortia and participation in international joint research initiatives. TUMSAT is consistently ranked among Japan’s top maritime institutions and has contributed extensively to innovations in ship design, fisheries management, and climate change resilience. Its applied research informs national ocean policy and supports industry partnerships across Asia and beyond.
Student life at TUMSAT is vibrant and inclusive, with numerous clubs and societies focusing on maritime sports, environmental advocacy, robotics, and cultural exchange. The university hosts annual festivals, international student activities, and academic competitions fostering cross-cultural understanding. Dedicated support services help both domestic and international students adapt to university life, including language assistance and career counseling. On-campus accommodations and recreational facilities, such as swimming pools and marine training centers, are complemented by arts, music, and volunteer organizations. The community values diversity and strives to create an open, globally engaged environment where students from around the world can thrive.
Guided by a mission of cultivating global citizens and pioneering sustainable development of ocean resources, TUMSAT emphasizes scientific innovation, ethical stewardship, and international cooperation. The university aspires to advance knowledge for the benefit of both humanity and the marine environment, fostering equity and forward-thinking leadership.
