The Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), located in Beijing, is the first science and engineering university in China. It was founded in 1940 by the Communist Party of China as the Yan’an Research Academy of Natural Sciences in Yan’an, Shaanxi Province. It was relocated to Beijing in 1949. It was then rebranded as the Beijing Engineering College in 1952, which became the first university in China to mold students for the needs of the defense industry. In 1988, it underwent another reorganization to become the Beijing Institute of Technology. Today, BIT is recognized as a national key university that has had the distinction of being part of Project 985 and Project 211.

BIT now has 20 schools, including the School of Marxism, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Cyberspace Science and Technology, the School of Optics and Photonics, and the School of Life Science. These offer 60 undergraduate majors, 144 graduate programs, and 62 doctoral degree programs. Among those are 16 national key disciplines and 25 ministry-level key disciplines. A few of those subject areas are material science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, social science, and computer science. These programs, and more, are spread across three campuses: Zhongguancun, Liangxiang, and Xishan.

The institute is also focusing on the development of innovative courses to meet the challenges encountered in medicine, materials engineering, and logistics. A few of these subject areas are Convergence Medical and Engineering, New Materials Science and Technology, and Delivery Equipment and Manufacturing.

The Beijing Institute of Technology has professors of high pedigree who give instructions. Forty-seven are recipients of the Chiang Jiang Scholars Program and 40 won in the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. There are also four state-level teachers and six state-level teaching groups.

Delivery of instruction at the university has been recognized as well through 20 national teaching awards and 14 recognized national excellent courses. Additionally, there are 10 national excellent video courses and 15 excellent online courses.

For research, BIT provides its researchers, faculty, and students with two national collaborative innovation centers and nine cooperative innovation research centers acknowledged at the state level. There are six other state-level research centers, too. Plus, the higher education institution has state-level laboratories.

Research projects at the Beijing Institute of Technology have produced results that are beneficial to China, such as the first transmitter and receiver for television, a 20-kilometer remote camera, a light tank, a two-stage high altitude research rocket, and a low-altitude height-finding radar.
