Institutional Identity and Foundation
The Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology (INSAIT) was established in 2022 in Sofia, Bulgaria. Conceived as a pioneering initiative, INSAIT is the first research institute in Eastern Europe with a focus comparable to leading global centers in computer science and AI. Functioning as a research-intensive public institution, it is affiliated with Sofia University, drawing academic leadership from globally recognized scientists. While still early in its development, INSAIT is growing rapidly, currently hosting more than 60 researchers and graduate students, including leading faculty recruited from the world’s top institutions. Its mission is to serve as a cornerstone for technology and innovation in the region and beyond.
Academic Strengths and Structure
INSAIT stands out for its concentration on computer science, artificial intelligence, and deep technology research. The institute is recognized for trailblazing work in machine learning, computer vision, robotics, and algorithms. Its educational model is built on interdisciplinary, mentor-driven research, emulating best practices from institutions such as ETH Zurich and MIT, with whom it maintains close collaborations. INSAIT operates in partnership with leading academic and corporate entities, including ETH Zurich, EPFL, Google, Amazon, and DeepMind, bringing both joint programs and visiting faculty. Notably, INSAIT has secured over $100 million in public and private funding since inception, underscoring its international momentum. The research output is rapidly expanding, with publications in premier venues (NeurIPS, ICML, CVPR), and the institute trains Bulgaria’s next generation of scientists on a global stage.
